Khulna Police Arrest 465 in Targeted Crackdown on Organized Crime

Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) arrested 23 individuals between Thursday evening and Friday morning as part of an intensified crackdown on organized crime, extortion, and narcotics trafficking. This latest operation brings the total number of arrests to 465 over the past nine days, according to a formal statement released by the KMP.

The coordinated sweep involved personnel from various city police stations alongside the Detective Branch. The arrests were distributed across the metropolis, with the highest concentration of suspects taken into custody in the Khulna and Sonadanga Model police station areas.

Among those apprehended was 38-year-old Md. Monirul Islam Mondal, an individual identified by police as a listed criminal in the Khalishpur area. Authorities confirmed that Mondal, who faces 17 separate criminal charges, was sought in connection with an active robbery case and an outstanding arrest warrant.

The ongoing security initiative follows a separate operation conducted throughout Thursday, which resulted in 16 arrests. That effort included the capture of 35-year-old Md. Monir Hossain, a suspected associate of a local criminal faction linked to notorious figure “Grenade Babu.” Police noted that Hossain, who was apprehended near the city’s 2nd Custom Ghat, is wanted for multiple counts of extortion across Khulna, Dhaka, and Bagerhat districts.

While KMP officials maintain that legal proceedings against the detainees are underway, concerns persist regarding the effectiveness of the crackdown. Despite the surge in arrests, several prominent underworld figures remain at large, and reports of criminal activity continue to emerge. Residents have expressed alarm as extortionists remain active, most notably evidenced by the forced closure of a market in the Sheikhpara area this past Wednesday following demands for protection money.
