Jamaat-e-Islami MP expelled over leaked video faces attempted murder charge

Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, is facing charges of attempted murder following a violent confrontation linked to the leakage of compromising personal footage. The case was filed at the Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka by Obaidur Rahman, the lawmaker’s former personal driver and the uncle of a woman identified by the MP as his second wife.

According to the legal complaint filed on July 21, the dispute began when Rahman confronted the 74-year-old MP over an alleged illicit relationship with his niece. The situation escalated after personal videos of the lawmaker and the woman surfaced on social media earlier this week. The MP, who was recently expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami, reportedly suspected that Rahman had leaked the footage to blackmailers and media outlets.

The court has ordered the imprisonment of Aminur Rahman, one of the four named accomplices in the attempted murder case, following his arrest by local police. Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Rakibul Huda presented the suspect before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday, where a judge directed that a formal investigation report be submitted by August 28.

In the case statement, Rahman detailed that he was lured into a room at a residential building in the Kalshi area of Pallabi on July 14 under false pretenses. He alleged that the defendants beat him with sticks and attempted to strangle him. Rahman, who sought medical treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital following the assault, claimed the attack was carried out under the direct instructions of the MP.

The controversy surrounding the lawmaker intensified following the viral circulation of several videos depicting him in intimate moments with a young woman. While some supporters initially claimed the footage was manipulated using artificial intelligence, the MP later confirmed in a social media statement that the woman, Mariyam Begum, was his second wife, claiming they were married in June with the consent of his first spouse.

Following the disclosure, Jamaat-e-Islami announced on Wednesday that it had expelled the MP from the party. In an official statement, the party cited “moral turpitude” as the grounds for the dismissal and confirmed that the decision would be formally communicated to the Election Commission.
