Homeless after years of political activism, Natore party worker moves into BNP office

Jahidul Islam, a 36-year-old day laborer and dedicated political activist, has moved into a local opposition party office in Natore’s Naldanga sub-district, marking a desperate turn in a life defined by decades of political devotion and subsequent social alienation. A long-time organizational secretary for the Madhanagar Union Jatiotabadi Swechchasebak Dal, Islam has spent the last 17 years facing repeated imprisonment and legal turmoil due to his ties with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

This sustained commitment to his political ideology has exacted a heavy toll on his personal life. Estranged from his parents and abandoned by his wife, who relocated with their children to her family home, Islam found himself without a permanent residence. After drifting between the homes of various villagers for years, he finally exhausted his welcome in the community and opted to make a small corner of the ward-level BNP office his permanent living space.

The transition to the party office was facilitated by a sympathetic party associate who provided Islam with a wooden cot. Within the modest, single-room facility, Islam now attempts to balance his survival as a day laborer with his continued political involvement. He admits that his dedication has cost him everything, yet he remains unable to step away from the movement. He expressed that politics has become inseparable from his identity, and he now hopes that local party leaders might eventually assist him in securing a modest, independent home.

Local party leadership acknowledges the severity of his situation. Rayhan Mina, vice president of the Madhanagar Swechchasebak Dal, described Islam as a talented singer who has contributed significantly to the party’s campaign efforts, noting with regret that the organization has thus far failed to provide him with adequate support.

Sirajul Islam, president of the ward-level BNP, confirmed that the party has authorized Islam to remain in the office for the time being. He added that the party is currently coordinating with district-level leadership to find a more permanent and dignified housing solution for the activist, who remains widely regarded within the local party ranks as a steadfast and self-sacrificing member.
