Attempted disappearance of baby Ramisa’s body after murder: Police

After seven-year-old Ramisa Akhtar was brutally murdered in the capital’s Pallavi, a couple living in a neighboring flat tried to hide the body. Police said this after arresting the main suspect Sohail Rana (34) and his wife Sapna Akhtar (26) in the incident.
According to the police, Ramisa’s dismembered body was recovered from a third-floor flat of house number 39, road number 7, road number 7 of Mirpur-11 section, around 11:30 am on Tuesday. After killing the child, his head was severed. Separate heads are available in toilets. The main part of the child’s body is found under the bed.

A press briefing was held at Pallabi police station around 10:30 pm after the arrest of the couple from the neighboring flat in the incident. Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) SN Md. Nazrul Islam said that around 10:30 in the morning, Ramisa’s mother started looking for her to go to school. Seeing a pair of shoes in front of the house, he suspected the flat next door. As the door was locked from inside, he started shouting and banging. At one point, when the door was opened, co-accused Swapna Akhtar was found. But the main accused Sohail Rana escaped by cutting the window grill.
Police officer Nazrul Islam said that the police entered the scene and recovered the body of the victim and collected various important evidence. Initially, it is believed that the victim may have been sexually assaulted. The evidence has been sent to CID for confirmation and investigation is ongoing. Further, the preliminary investigation suggests that the accused tried to dismember the body to hide the crime and dispose of the body; But when the victim’s mother came to know about it, he could not complete his plan and ran away.

Police arrested Sohail Rana from Fatulla in Narayanganj in the evening. Sohail and his wife’s house is in Singra in Naogaon, police officials said.
According to the police and family, Ramisa Akhtar was studying in class two in a local school. His father’s name is Abdul Hannan Mollah. He works in a recruiting agency. Mother’s name is Parveen Akhter. Ramisa is the younger of their two daughters. Eldest daughter Raisa Akhtar studies in Class IX in a local school. The family has been living in the third floor north side flat of House No. 39, Road No. 7, B Block, Section No. 11, Mirpur, Pallabir for about 17 years. The child’s body was found in a room of a neighboring flat.
After noon, Pallaveer went in front of that house and saw a crowd of eager people in front of the house. As soon as the crowd pushes into the house, it can be seen that the members of different police units are collecting evidence. Crowd of relatives at Ramisad’s house. Ramisa’s parents were sitting speechless in a room.
Ramisa’s uncle AKM Nazrul Islam told Prothom Alo that Ramisa was supposed to go to school with her elder sister Raisa around 10:30 am. Ramisa was suddenly nowhere to be found. Her mother Parveen finds a shoe lying on Ramisa’s foot outside the flat door. Then he knocked on the door of the flat next door. The door was not opened from inside. After knocking for a long time, the door was not opened. This raises doubts. Later the matter was reported to the police. The police came and recovered the body.
Additional Commissioner of DMP Nazrul Islam said information about a previous case against Sohail Rana under the Anti-Terrorism Act in Natore district has been received. Based on his behavior and the initial statements of his wife Sapna, it is believed that he may be mentally disturbed and sexually perverted. But the matter can be confirmed after getting the investigation and forensic report.
Police officer Nazrul Islam, quoting the arrested Swapna Akhter, said that Swapna claimed that she was asleep after consuming sleeping pills and did not know anything about the incident. However, the investigation revealed that Ramisa’s mother had cooperated by not opening the door for a long time even after knocking on the door and creating an opportunity for the main accused Sohail Rana to escape. Ramisa’s body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for post-mortem.
