Historic Pagla Mosque Collects Record Donations as Counting Begins in Kishoreganj

Thirteen donation boxes at the historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj were opened on Saturday, yielding an unprecedented 43 sacks of currency, alongside significant quantities of gold jewelry and foreign banknotes. The collection, which had accumulated over the past six months, suggests that the total donations will likely surpass all previous financial records for the site.
Under the supervision of district administration officials, including District Commissioner and Mosque Committee President Sohana Nasrin and Additional Police Superintendent Nazmus Sakib Khan, the process began at 7 a.m. The funds were transferred from the collection boxes into sacks before being moved to a counting area. A workforce of over 500 people, including 350 students from local madrasas, 130 officials from Rupali Bank, and members of the armed forces and local police, are managing the arduous counting process.
The mosque, situated on the banks of the Narsunda River, attracts thousands of visitors from across the country who believe that contributions here lead to the fulfillment of prayers. This profound public trust resulted in a record-breaking collection of over 11.78 crore taka last December. According to officials, the mosque’s current bank balance stands at approximately 114.13 crore taka, supplemented by an additional 25 lakh taka in online donations.
Plans for the future of the site are ambitious. The administration has acquired an additional 53.7 decimals of land to expand the existing complex. With the guidance of technical experts from the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, the mosque committee intends to construct a modern 10-story Islamic multipurpose complex inspired by the architecture of Istanbul’s Bosphorus-front mosques. The proposed facility is designed to accommodate 50,000 worshippers, including a dedicated space for 5,000 women, and will feature an extensive library, IT center, orphanage, and cafeteria.
Local authorities emphasized that rigorous security protocols remain in place throughout the counting and deposit process. The funds collected are utilized to support the maintenance of the mosque and its associated Islamic complex, with all surplus revenue held in secure bank accounts under government oversight. The expansion project is expected to break ground soon, marking a new chapter for the landmark site that continues to serve as both a spiritual sanctuary and a testament to public philanthropy.
