A sharp, localized downpour swept through Dhaka on Friday afternoon, offering immediate relief from a stifling heatwave that had plagued the capital since the morning. The sudden rainfall, which saw 43 millimeters of precipitation within a three-hour window, caused temperatures to plummet by nearly 10 degrees Celsius, transforming the oppressive conditions of the day into a cool evening.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the city’s temperature dropped from a scorching 35.1 degrees Celsius at midday to 25.8 degrees Celsius by 6 p.m. While the rain provided a reprieve for the city, it also triggered significant waterlogging, complicating travel for residents who were caught unprepared for the downpour. Although the agency had forecasted rain, the intensity of the storm exceeded initial expectations, leaving many commuters stranded on flooded streets during the two-hour deluge.

The rainfall is part of a broader atmospheric shift as the monsoon season finally makes its presence felt across the country. Meteorologists confirm that monsoon winds have now spread to almost every region, though the transition remains in its early stages. Weather experts, including AKM Nazmul Islam and Md. Hafizur Rahman, noted that while the monsoon has arrived, it has not yet reached full intensity. The current weather pattern is characterized by isolated showers rather than the sustained, heavy rainfall typical of the season’s peak.
Looking ahead, officials suggest that while scattered rain is expected to continue in various parts of the country over the coming days, the sustained, consistent rainfall associated with the monsoon may still be several days away. The capital is unlikely to see significant precipitation on Saturday, as the atmosphere stabilizes following Friday’s burst of activity.
