Happy Buddhapurnima today

Happy Buddhapurnima, the main religious festival of Buddhists, is today Friday. According to Buddhism, Mahamati Gautama Buddha appeared on this day about two and a half thousand years ago. Gautama Buddha’s auspicious birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana—these three commemorative Baisakhi Purnima are known as Buddha Purnima to the Buddhist community around the world.
Buddha’s basic philosophy of life is non-violence, equality, friendship and coexistence bound by love. Gautama Buddha, the founder of non-violence, said, enmity by enmity, enmity by enmity is never quenched. Violence should be mitigated by non-violence, hostility by non-enmity.
Buddhists across the country will celebrate the day with various ceremonies including Buddha Puja and Shila taking, pindaan, Bhikshu Sangha breakfast.
On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, Prime Minister Tariq Rahman exchanged greetings with the leaders of the Buddhist community at the Secretariat on Thursday. At that time, the Prime Minister said that the government is determined to ensure an environment in which every person of the country can live in peace and security, irrespective of party, religion and caste.
Greeting the Buddhists, Tariq Rahman said that every religion calls people towards welfare. Mahamati Gautama Buddha, the chief priest of Buddhism, gave the Panchasila principles to his followers. These five principles are not to kill animals, not to steal, not to commit adultery, not to lie and to abstain from drugs. Love, non-violence and kindness to all living beings are also teachings of Buddhism.
The Bangladesh Buddhist Federation said in a press release that various day-long programs have been taken up on the occasion of Buddha Purnima at the Merul Badda International Buddhist Monastery in the capital. They said, Buddha Puja, Shila will be accepted at Merul Badda International Buddhist Vihara today at 10 am. And at six in the evening there will be a special discussion meeting and cultural program on the significance of Buddhapurnima.
General Secretary of Bangladesh Buddhist Federation Bhikkhu Sunandapriya told Prothom Alo, that wars and strife disappear in the world, people can live in Bangladesh without discrimination and have civil rights – this is the prayer and wish of this year’s Buddhapurnima.
