The villagers of Bhaigar have never seen the funeral and burial of four people together

A gathering of thousands of people in the middle of the village in the field of Madrasa. On the west side of the field, four cots lay the body wrapped in a white shroud. Standing next to the body, one is holding each other and crying. Funeral of four people together has never been done in this village before. The family of the deceased, villagers and people from far and wide are looking at the four beds. The air of the village is heavy with the cries of relatives.
Today Wednesday around 9:30 a.m., such a heartbreaking scene was seen in Bhaigar village on the border of Dinajpur’s Birampur upazila. Last Monday night, a truck loaded with rice lost control and fell into a ditch at Hasanpur in Daudkandi, Comilla. Seven people were killed and six were seriously injured when they were crushed under the truck. The house of the four deceased is in Bhaigor village of Birampur upazila.

This morning, the funeral of the four deceased was completed at the Baigar Talimul Qur’an Academy ground. Local Hafez Riazul Islam led their funeral prayers.
The four deceased are Abu Hossain (42), Bishu Mia (45), Sumon Babu (22) and Abdur Rashid (65) of Bhaigar village. All the deceased were the sole earners of their families.

The other three who died in the accident are Afzal Hossain (35), Sohrab Hossain (40) and Abu Salek (45) of Khalippur village in Nawabganj Upazila of Dinajpur. At around 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday morning, the three were buried in the family cemetery after the Janaza at the Dangi Government Primary School grounds of Khalippur village.
All the dead are rice harvesting workers. Relatives said that they were looking for work by truck to reduce expenses.
Relatives, friends and common people from Birampur and surrounding upazilas rushed to Bhaigar village on hearing that the funeral and burial of four people will be held at the same time in Bhaigar village.
Badal Hossain (47), a resident of that village, was digging the graves of Abu Hossain and Sumon Babu who died in the cemetery. He said that since the age of twelve or fourteen, he has been digging graves with his father and grandfather in the village. He never dug two or four graves together in his life. In a shocking incident today, he dug two graves together. Four news were dug in the village, it is very painful.
Mother Shirin Sultana is crying sitting on the balcony of her house after losing her son Abu Hossain. He said Abu Hussain was forbidden by his father to go to Comilla for work. But he insisted. Abu Hussain’s sons also allowed him to go.
On the day of going to Comilla, cook and feed the son his favorite food, jackfruit seeds (seeds). Mother Shireen Sultana’s heart was burning for her son since the night after her son left. The next morning he received the news of his son’s death on his mobile phone.
Mojirul Islam, the father of Abu Hossain, who died in a road accident, said that Bangladesh was made independent for the safety of all. This security should not be undermined, the government should ensure it.
Local agricultural workers said that every year in April there is no work in nearby villages including Bhaigar. For this, the village agricultural workers go to Faridpur to pick onions and Comilla to harvest rice. He works there for a daily wage of 700 to 800 taka. After working for two weeks, they return home with an additional income of 10 to 12 thousand taka. Every year, during this season, about 250 agricultural laborers from the villages of Bhaigar and its surroundings go to different districts and work as daily wage workers.
Birampur Upazila Agriculture Officer Kamal Krishna Roy said that every year in April there is relatively less work in the crop fields of two-three unions of Birampur Upazila. For this, in order to earn a living, about one and a half to two thousand agricultural workers of this upazila went to different districts to pick onions and harvest paddy in advance.
