Police Cite Internal BNP Factional Conflict in Fatal Mirpur Shooting

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a Jubo Dal activist in Dhaka’s Mirpur area as the result of internal factional infighting within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated organizations. The incident, which occurred Friday night in the Mirpur-13 neighborhood, has intensified concerns regarding local political violence and regional power struggles.

The victim, 45-year-old Yusuf Ali Parvez, was killed when assailants opened fire at a tea stall located near the residence of Hafizul Islam Babu, the member secretary of the Kafrul Thana Jubo Dal unit. Authorities believe the gunmen intended to target Hafizul himself, likely due to disputes over local dominance and upcoming city corporation election candidacies. Another Jubo Dal activist, Monir Hossain, and a vegetable vendor, Salam Sardar, were wounded in the attack.

According to investigative sources, a four-man hit squad was recruited from Jhenaidah and brought to Dhaka four days prior to the shooting. The suspects reportedly spent several days conducting surveillance on Hafizul’s home and office before executing the attack. Witnesses stated that the assailants approached the tea stall where the local political figures were gathered; when Yusuf Ali attempted to question two suspicious individuals, a gunman drew a pistol and fired at point-blank range, fatally wounding him.

One suspect, identified as 34-year-old Chanchal Molla, was apprehended by locals at the scene while attempting to flee and has since been placed under a three-day police remand. Investigators revealed that the suspects were staying at a hotel in Mirpur-10 while awaiting the opportunity to target Hafizul. While Chanchal has admitted to traveling from Jhenaidah, police are still working to identify the individuals who orchestrated the contract killing.

A case has been filed at Kafrul Police Station by the victim’s brother, while a second case involving illegal firearms has been initiated by the police. Authorities are actively pursuing the three remaining suspects—Jihad Molla, Jiarul Molla, and a man identified only as Hasan—who fled the scene during the confrontation.

In response to the violence, Dhaka North Metropolitan Jubo Dal leadership has stated that an internal investigation is underway. Member Secretary Sajjadul Miraj confirmed that if any members of the organization are found to have instigated or facilitated the assassination, they will face strict disciplinary action. Police continue to review CCTV footage from the surrounding area to track the movements of the suspects and determine the ultimate source of the weapons used in the attack.
