Dhaka police arrest nine members of inter-district robbery gang for gold theft

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested nine members of an organized inter-district robbery gang in connection with the theft of 57 bhori of gold ornaments and cash from a jewelry merchant in the capital’s Wari area. Authorities seized 17 bhori of melted gold, 680,000 taka in cash, a microbus, a motorcycle, and various tools used to facilitate the crimes.
The operation followed a robbery on May 27, when victim Haripada Pal and his manager were accosted while returning home at approximately 10:30 p.m. According to the police report, the suspects intercepted the pair while posing as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police. Claiming the victims were in possession of narcotics, the gang forced them into a microbus, blindfolded them, and issued death threats before seizing the gold and cash. The victims were later abandoned near the Kamalapur Railway Station.

Following a complaint filed by Mr. Pal at Wari Police Station, investigators utilized surveillance footage and forensic technology to track the perpetrators. On June 6, police intercepted the gang near Ittefaq intersection as they were preparing for another robbery. Six suspects were apprehended at the scene; officers recovered three vests marked “DB,” a toy pistol, two walkie-talkies, handcuffs, and other equipment used to impersonate law enforcement.
The subsequent investigation led authorities to conduct raids in Jashore and Tantibazar, resulting in the arrest of three additional suspects. The nine detained individuals, identified as Shahidul Islam Majhi, Abdul Malek, Monir Hossain, Yusuf Kazi, Raisul Islam, Ariful Islam, Afzal Hossain, Tinnath Pal, and Ripon Pal, currently remain in police custody. A new case has been filed against the group at Wari Police Station regarding the planned robbery intercepted by officers.
