Handcuffed drug suspect recaptured after leaping into river during police transport

A drug suspect in Cumilla, Bangladesh, led police on a brief pursuit late Sunday night after leaping into the Titas River while handcuffed, in a failed attempt to evade custody. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ismail Mia, had been apprehended by local residents earlier that evening in the Panchabati Soleman Shah Mazar area of Homna upazila.

According to police accounts, residents discovered Mia in possession of 17 yaba tablets and detained him following a physical altercation. He was subsequently handed over to the Homna police station to face formal charges. While in custody, Mia complained of severe discomfort and injuries resulting from the earlier beating by the public, prompting officers to transport him to the Homna Upazila Health Complex for medical evaluation.

During the transit to the hospital, situated near the police station, the handcuffed suspect managed to break away and plunged into the adjacent Titas River. Law enforcement officers immediately launched a search operation and, with the assistance of local residents, successfully recovered and re-arrested Mia from the water.

Homna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Thomas Barua confirmed that the suspect remained in custody following the incident. Mia was presented before a local court on Monday afternoon and has since been transferred to the district jail to await further legal proceedings.
