Four suspects arrested for fatal stabbing during Ashura procession in Dhaka

A 31-year-old Dhaka South City Corporation cleaner was fatally stabbed in Old Dhaka’s Banglabazar area on Friday following a dispute over a ritual procession. The victim, Mohammad Zakir Hossain, was attacked during an Ashura Tazia procession, according to officials from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
DMP Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the details during a press briefing at the force’s media center on Saturday. Investigators determined that the violence erupted when an argument broke out over holding the ropes of a “duli,” a symbolic structure carried during the Tazia procession.
The procession, which had departed from the Bibika Rauza Imambara in Sutrapur, was making its way toward Dhanmondi when the confrontation occurred near P.K. Roy Road. Police reports state that after a brief verbal altercation and subsequent scuffle, a group of unidentified individuals chased Hossain. The victim attempted to take shelter inside the Ispahani Building, where he was cornered, beaten, and stabbed by the attackers. Although bystanders and police rushed him to Mitford Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In response to the incident, the victim’s brother filed a murder case naming 14 to 15 unidentified suspects. Following an analysis of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the scene, authorities launched an immediate operation in the city’s Gendaria area.
By late Friday night, police had arrested four individuals, including a 20-year-old identified as Md. Rashed and three minors. During the arrests, officers recovered a switchblade and a machete believed to be linked to the crime. Authorities confirmed that the remaining suspects have been identified, and ongoing efforts to apprehend them are currently underway.
