Druggist Murdered in Burglary Attempt

A medicine trader was hacked to death inside his home in Koyra Upazila, Khulna, by assailants who apparently tunneled into his residence. The victim, identified as Bhabotosh Mridha, 40, sustained multiple sharp weapon injuries, while his wife, Biva Mridha, was also injured in the attack.
The incident occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Sunday in the village of Maheshwaripur within Maheshwaripur Union. Bhabotosh Mridha, son of the late Jasho Mridha, owned a pharmacy in the local Gilabari market.
On Monday morning, a crowd had gathered at Bhabotosh Mridha’s courtyard. The house was sealed by police early that day to preserve evidence, according to local residents. Bloodstains were visible on the veranda and stairs. A large hole, dug from the outside, was discovered in the rear of the house, leading locals to believe it was the entry point for the attackers.
Neighbors reported that the hole was adjacent to a refrigerator inside the house, through which the assailants gained access. Bhabotosh, his wife, and their young son slept in that room, while his mother and daughter occupied an adjacent room.
Bhabotosh’s mother, Ashulata Mridha, recounted hearing her daughter-in-law’s cries and finding her son covered in blood. She expressed shock that the attackers could enter and commit the murder without her noticing.
Another neighbor, Porimal Mondal, stated that the screams of Bhabotosh’s wife and daughter alerted them around 2:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. Upon entering the house, they found Bhabotosh lying face down in a pool of blood, still warm, prompting immediate efforts to take him to the hospital. His wife also suffered a cut to her leg.
Bhabotosh’s injured wife, Biva Mridha, indicated the attack took place between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. She claimed to have recognized an individual named Gafur and suggested a pre-existing enmity related to land disputes might be the motive.
Dr. Sujit Kumar Baidya, resident medical officer at Koyra Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that Bhabotosh Mridha was brought to the hospital around 3:30 a.m. but was declared dead on arrival. He sustained deep, sharp weapon wounds across his body, including a significant injury to his throat and chest.
Koyra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shah Alam stated that an investigation has commenced following the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the motive was not simple theft or robbery, as no valuables appear to be missing. Police are exploring possibilities of prior enmity or personal conflicts.
