In Brahmanbaria’s Bancharampur upazila, a VAT inspector was tied to an electric pole and beaten for asking for VAT-related documents of a shop. The incident took place on the east side of Durgarampur Bridge of Upazila Sadar on Saturday afternoon.
The name of the person who was beaten was Md. Saiful Islam He is the VAT inspector of the Brahmanbaria office of the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate.
It has been found that Saiful Islam went to the shop of Habibur Rahman, the owner of M/s Allah Bharsa Enterprise, on the east side of Durgarampur Bridge of Bancharampur Upazila Sadar at around 2:15 PM today. There, he introduced himself to the businessman and wanted to see the VAT-related documents. At that time, businessman Habibur suspected that Saiful Islam was “fake” because he was performing duties on public holidays.
Even when the VAT inspector showed his visiting card, the businessman’s suspicion did not go away. Later, people gathered and snatched the mobile phone of the VAT inspector and at one stage beat him by tying him to an electric pole there. After receiving the information, the police reached the spot and rescued the VAT inspector and took him to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex.
Bancharampur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Ranjan Burman said that a person named Saiful Islam came for treatment at noon. He has injury marks on different parts of his body. His right arm was broken above the elbow. He has been sent to Pangu Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.
Saiful Islam said, he went to Habibur Rahman’s shop at noon. At that time, he wants to know from the trader whether he has VAT registration or not. The businessman is said to have two establishments. One is ‘Ms Allah Bharsa Enterprise’ and the other is ‘Brothers International’. When asked to show the documents, Habibu said, ‘What office is closed on Saturday? Are you a government official or fake?’ Even though he showed his visiting card, some employees of Habibu tied him to an electric pole and beat him and broke his arm. The police went and rescued him.
Saiful Islam also said that he is the officer in charge of Brahmanbaria office of Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate. Everyone knows him, including the executive officer of the upazila. Even after saying these things, he was not spared.
Brahmanbaria Circle Revenue Officer Abdul Gani said that Saiful Islam, a VAT inspector working in his office, was tied to an electric pole and beaten. Going to the office tomorrow Sunday will decide on the next steps.
Mohammad Yasin, officer-in-charge of Bancharampur police station, told Prothom Alo that no written complaint has been received in this incident yet. Legal action will be taken if complaints are received.
