Former youth political leader surrenders to police over rape of 10-year-old girl in Netrokona

A local political activist accused of raping a 10-year-old girl in Mohanganj, Netrokona, surrendered to police late Friday night, ending a weeks-long manhunt that had sparked widespread public outcry. The suspect, a leader within the Mohanganj municipal unit of the volunteer political wing Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal, turned himself in at the local police station at approximately 1:00 a.m.
The suspect had been on the run since the legal proceedings were initiated in late April. Following the initial allegations, his political organization confirmed that he was formally expelled from the party. Despite the severity of the charges, the accused maintained his innocence while speaking to reporters during his surrender, characterizing the case as a conspiracy and expressing his intent to prove his innocence through the judicial process.
The investigation into the incident began after the victim’s mother filed a formal complaint in court on April 28. According to case documents and statements from the child’s family, the victim—who is described as having mild intellectual disabilities—was left at home with her younger siblings on December 9, 2024, while their parents were away at work. The complaint alleges that the neighbor entered the home and committed the assault, threatening the child with death if she disclosed the incident.
The trauma remained hidden for months until the child fell ill in March. Following medical examinations at a local diagnostic center on March 12, doctors confirmed that the girl was five months pregnant. After the court reviewed the evidence, it directed the Mohanganj police to register the case, which was officially recorded on May 2.
Officer-in-Charge of Mohanganj Police Station, Hafijul Islam, stated that authorities had been in contact with the suspect’s family, providing counseling to encourage a voluntary surrender. Police confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and is being processed for transfer to the court.
