Dhaka Court Sentences Two Fugitives to Life for 2011 Murder of Vegetable Trader

A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the 2011 murder of a vegetable trader in the capital’s Gandaria area, concluding a legal battle that spanned more than a decade.
Judge Mahmudul Islam of the Ninth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court delivered the verdict against the two fugitives, identified as Babu, also known as Bagha Babu, and Mamun. In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of 10,000 taka on each convict, stipulating that they must serve an additional six months in prison should they fail to pay.
The court also handed down separate five-year rigorous prison terms to both men for robbery, along with a fine of 5,000 taka each, with three additional months of jail time in default of payment. Because both men remain at large, the judge has issued warrants for their arrest.
According to state counsel Aminul Islam Sarkar, a third defendant named Sajib was also implicated in the case but died while proceedings were ongoing, leading to the termination of his trial.
The conviction stems from a violent incident on February 15, 2011. The victim, Chunnu Mia, who operated a vegetable business in the city’s Shyambazar, was returning from the Jatrabari wholesale market in a rickshaw when the perpetrators intercepted him near the Gandaria wooden bridge. The assailants robbed him of his cash and, fearing identification, stabbed him to death before fleeing the scene.
The victim’s brother-in-law, Jahangir Hossain, filed a murder case with the Gandaria Police Station the following day. Sub-Inspector Moniruzzaman subsequently filed a charge sheet against the three suspects in June 2011. The court framed charges in August of that year, and testimony concluded after 10 of the 19 listed witnesses provided accounts of the events.
