Fire at Chittagong palm oil tanker contained after four-hour operation

A fire broke out aboard a palm oil tanker anchored at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port on Thursday morning, prompting a multi-agency emergency response that lasted four hours.
The blaze ignited in the generator room of the MT Meghna Trader at approximately 7:30 a.m. Local port authorities and the Bangladesh Coast Guard immediately launched a joint operation involving the Navy and port tugboats to contain the flames. According to a statement from Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam, emergency crews worked continuously until the fire was successfully brought under control by 11:30 a.m.
The vessel, which arrived from Indonesia on May 26, was carrying a total cargo of 11,500 tons of palm oil. Port records indicate that more than half of the cargo had already been offloaded prior to the incident. Authorities confirmed that all crew members were safely evacuated from the generator room immediately after the fire was detected, and no casualties were reported.
