Former State Minister for Labour Nazrul Islam Chowdhury dies at 77

Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, a former State Minister for Labor and Employment and a three-time member of parliament, died early Monday at a private hospital in Dhaka at the age of 77.

Family members confirmed that the veteran politician had been battling cancer for several months. He had been receiving medical care at the facility for the past three months, but his condition deteriorated significantly in recent days, necessitating life support before he eventually succumbed to the illness at 4:15 a.m.

Chowdhury was a prominent figure in regional politics, having served as a lawmaker representing the Chittagong-14 constituency, which covers parts of Chandanaish and Satkania. In addition to his parliamentary service, he held the position of vice president for the Awami League’s South Chittagong district branch. He is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, and a wide circle of relatives and supporters.

His nephew, Bayezid Al Nahiyan, stated that the body is being transported to the politician’s residence in the Beverly Hill residential area of Chittagong. The initial funeral prayer is scheduled for 10 p.m. Monday. A second funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. on the grounds of Kanchanabad High School in Chandanaish, followed by his interment at the family graveyard.
