Collision Between Express Train and Illegal Sand Truck Halts Chittagong Rail Traffic

Train services on the Dhaka-Chittagong railway line were suspended for nearly an hour Sunday morning after a Sylhet-bound Paharika Express train collided with a sand-laden pickup truck in the Mirsharai upazila of Chittagong. The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:55 a.m. in the Madhya Sonapahar area of Jorarganj Union, resulted in no casualties.
According to local residents and railway officials, the collision took place when the driver of the pickup truck attempted to cross the tracks at an unauthorized crossing while transporting sand extracted from a nearby stream. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver managed to jump from the vehicle just before the impact, leaving the pickup truck destroyed by the force of the collision. The Paharika Express continued its journey toward Sylhet without stopping following the incident.

Jaydeb Shil, the assistant executive engineer for the Feni region of Bangladesh Railway, confirmed that the accident was caused by the use of an illegal level crossing. He stated that the railway authority plans to launch an investigation into the matter and will take immediate measures to permanently block the unauthorized crossing to prevent future incidents.
The impact caused damage to the railway line, prompting an immediate halt to train traffic in both directions. Operations partially resumed after one hour by routing trains through the line heading toward Dhaka. Railway crews remained on-site following the incident to restore the damaged track sections and resume normal operations on the Chittagong-bound line.
