Former Education Minister Dipu Moni released on 12-hour parole to attend husbands funeral

Former Education Minister and joint general secretary of the now-prohibited Awami League, Dipu Moni, was released on a 12-hour parole from Munshiganj District Jail on Thursday morning to attend her husband’s funeral. She was escorted from the facility at approximately 6:15 a.m. following a formal request filed by her daughter.

Acting Jailer Md. Hasem Reza confirmed that the facility received the release directive on Wednesday evening. Dipu Moni was transported to Dhaka under heavy security, with a police detail consisting of 38 officers across three vehicles. Authorities have mandated that she be returned to custody by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The release was granted by the Munshiganj District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner, Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi, following an application submitted Wednesday afternoon by Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Gazi Faisal Islam. The former minister had been incarcerated at Munshiganj District Jail in connection with multiple cases involving killings during the 2024 mass uprising.

Dipu Moni’s husband, Toufique Nawaz, died at 10:27 p.m. on Tuesday at Continental Hospital in Dhaka’s Gulshan area, where he had been receiving treatment for chronic kidney and liver complications. Previous requests for Dipu Moni to visit her bedridden husband while in custody had been denied.

Following her release, Dipu Moni was taken to the couple’s residence in Kalabagan to pay her final respects. The funeral proceedings are scheduled to continue at the Gulshan Azad Mosque, where the funeral prayer (Janaza) will be held following Dhuhr prayers. Toufique Nawaz is expected to be interred at the Banani Graveyard.
