Former Awami League official accused of abducting and beating madrasa teacher in Rangpur over financial dispute

A lecturer at a local madrasa was hospitalized on Sunday following an alleged abduction and assault by a former local political official in Pirganj, Rangpur. Golam Rabbani, a lecturer at Sorlia TM Fazil Madrasa, was reportedly seized from a bank branch and beaten by Ziaur Rahman Zia, the former secretary of the Chhatra Union branch of the now-banned Awami League, and his associates over a long-standing financial dispute.
Witnesses stated that the confrontation occurred at the Chhatrahat branch of Sonali Bank, where the group allegedly dragged Rabbani out of the facility and forcibly took him to a nearby business establishment. During the assault, the victim was subjected to threats and physical violence, eventually falling ill due to the severity of the encounter.
Local residents alerted the national emergency service via the 999 hotline, prompting police intervention. Authorities successfully rescued Rabbani, who was initially transported to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex. Due to the nature of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
The victim’s wife, Ferdousi Begum, has publicly condemned the abduction, stating that her family is currently living in fear and demanding justice for the assault.
In response to the allegations, Zia denied any involvement in the assault, claiming instead that he is the victim of a coordinated frame-up. He alleged that Rabbani owes him money and previously coerced him into signing blank checks and legal stamps under duress. Zia maintained that he merely approached the lecturer to request repayment and denied engaging in any physical confrontation.
Officer-in-Charge of Pirganj Police Station, Najmul Haque, confirmed that while the incident has come to the attention of law enforcement, no formal written complaint had been filed as of Sunday. He stated that police are prepared to launch a full investigation once a formal report is submitted.
