Feni Police Superintendent laments public criticism of force following July uprising fallout

Feni Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumdar acknowledged the immense challenges facing law enforcement during a reception for victims and survivors of the July uprising, remarking that the nature of police work often leaves the force unable to satisfy public expectations. Speaking Wednesday at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium, Majumdar addressed criticism regarding police conduct during the recent political turmoil, describing the profession as one burdened by inherent adversity.
The event, organized by the district administration, honored families of those killed and approximately 500 individuals injured during the July movement. Majumdar, who has served in his current post for two months, defended the police response to the post-uprising legal challenges. He reported that out of 22 cases filed in connection with the unrest, authorities have already submitted charge sheets for 14. While police have apprehended over 1,200 suspects, the superintendent noted that 860 of those individuals have subsequently been released on bail.
The day’s commemorations began earlier at the July Martyrs’ Memorial in the Muktabazar area. District Administrator Monira Haque led the proceedings, placing a floral wreath at the monument, followed by representatives from the police, local government, the Civil Surgeon’s office, and various political and social organizations.
The afternoon reception featured remarks from several local leaders, including District Council Administrator M.A. Khalek, Feni district Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Abdul Hannan, and BNP Joint Convener Gazi Habibullah. The ceremony underscored the ongoing tension between the community and law enforcement as the district continues to process the legal and social repercussions of the July uprising.
