Driver accuses former Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam of misconduct and intimidation amid viral video controversy

Obaidur Rahman, a former driver and personal assistant to Gazi Nazrul Islam, a 75-year-old former Jamaat-e-Islami leader and member of parliament for Satkhira-4, has publicly accused the politician of engaging in an illicit relationship and orchestrating a campaign of harassment against him. During a press conference held at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh office in Dhaka on Saturday, Rahman alleged that the politician attempted to bribe and manipulate him after he uncovered the nature of the relationship.
The controversy centers on a leaked video circulating on social media that purportedly shows Gazi Nazrul Islam in a compromising position with a young woman. While the politician has publicly claimed the woman is his second wife, Rahman contends that he discovered the relationship in mid-June. According to Rahman, when he confronted the politician, Gazi Nazrul Islam allegedly offered him financial incentives, a position as a personal assistant, and employment as a driver to secure his silence.
Rahman stated that he accepted the driving position not for personal gain, but to document evidence of the politician’s conduct and to ensure the safety of the woman involved. He claims to have monitored the pair at several locations across Dhaka, including a coffee shop near the Pallabi metro station and a training center in Mirpur-12, asserting that CCTV footage exists to corroborate these encounters.
The situation escalated on July 13, when Rahman alleges he was lured to a meeting in the Khilkhet area by the woman’s father and an associate named Aminur, following a conversation with Gazi Nazrul Islam. Rahman claims he was subjected to a violent assault, including an attempted strangulation, which necessitated emergency medical treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.
Following the assault, Rahman filed a case at the Pallabi Police Station on July 21. He noted that the investigation was subsequently transferred to the Detective Branch of police, though the suspects involved in the attack have since been released on bail. In a retaliatory legal move, Rahman stated that a case was filed against him on August 2 by his sister and the woman’s mother, alleging kidnapping, human trafficking, and extortion. That matter is currently being investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation.
Rahman concluded the press conference by asserting that he is under constant threat and is being pressured to withdraw the legal case he initiated. He confirmed that he filed a General Diary at the Pallabi Police Station on August 20 regarding these threats and stated that his family has been forced to relocate for their safety. He called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations.
