Dredge Pipe on Road Kills Businessman in Kishoreganj

A chemical businessman died Saturday night in Kuliarchar, Kishoreganj, after being thrown from his motorcycle while attempting to cross an elevated dredge pipe laid across a road. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in the Barkharchar area of the upazila.

Md. Sohel Rana, 35, a resident of Panaullahchar village in Bhairab upazila’s Shibpur union, was returning home on his motorcycle after a business trip to Bajitpur. As he navigated through the Barkharchar area, his motorcycle encountered a section of the road where a dredge pipe had been elevated with soil to cover it. Rana lost control while attempting to cross this raised obstruction, was thrown from his bike, and subsequently collided with a tree on the roadside. He sustained critical injuries and succumbed to them around 10 p.m. while being transported to Dhaka for treatment.

Local residents have voiced long-standing complaints about the proliferation of dredge pipes laid across roads in various parts of Kuliarchar. They allege that these elevated sections frequently cause accidents and injuries, particularly at night. Despite ongoing discussions regarding the issue, residents claim that local authorities have failed to take effective measures to remove the pipes, and dredge owners have largely ignored the public’s distress.

Kazi Arif Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge of Kuliarchar Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that a person died after being thrown from his motorcycle.
