Dhaka hosts Monsoon Revolution concert marking second anniversary of mass uprising

Thousands gathered on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Wednesday to commemorate the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, marking the occasion with a vibrant musical event titled “Songs of the Monsoon Revolution.” Organized by the Monsoon Cultural Center in association with the National Citizens Party (NCP), the concert transformed the iconic thoroughfare into a stage for reflection, solidarity, and celebration of the student-led movement that reshaped the nation’s political landscape.
The event commenced mid-afternoon under a light rain, which did little to deter the crowds as the festivities kicked off on a massive stage constructed on the avenue. As the weather cleared, the venue saw a surge in attendance, with audiences enjoying performances from a diverse lineup of artists, including Riaz Morshed, Nahid and the Magicians, rapper Tahmid, Parsha Mahjabeen, Avoid Rafa, Arbovirus, Kureghor, Sezan, Asif Akbar, Shironamhin, Artcell, and Hasan from the band Ark.
Interspersed with the musical performances was a formal ceremony dedicated to honoring those who sacrificed their lives or sustained injuries during the uprising. Speakers also used the platform to commemorate victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during the previous administration. Acting Speaker of Parliament Kaiser Kamal, serving as the chief guest, urged the nation to remain vigilant in protecting the gains of the revolution, calling for a unified commitment to building a fascist-free Bangladesh.
Government Chief Whip Nurul Islam emphasized a firm stance against lingering political threats, vowing that those who seek to stifle democratic discourse will be held accountable. His sentiments were echoed by Opposition Chief Whip and NCP convener Nahid Islam, who expressed gratitude toward the artistic community for their pivotal role in supporting the student-led struggle.
The event also served as a stage for reaffirming national sovereignty and resilience. Whip A.B.M. Ashraf Uddin (Nizan) and NCP lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah addressed mounting geopolitical pressures, stressing the need for national unity against external provocations. The gathering concluded as a powerful display of political resolve, blending the cultural energy of the uprising with a firm commitment to the democratic ideals established by the movement two years ago.
