Dhaka Court Grants Three-Day Remand for Two Suspects in Extremism Case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered two men back into police custody for three days of further interrogation in connection with an ongoing investigation into extremist activities. The ruling, delivered by Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam, follows the arrests of six individuals in the city’s Jatrabari area earlier this month.
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed that while two suspects—identified as Shah Amanat Sabir and Hossain Tanim—will undergo additional questioning, the court denied bail for the remaining four suspects, Junaed, Ataullah Shah, Abidur Rahman, and Bayezid, ordering them to be held in jail.

The case originated on July 5, when law enforcement officers, acting on intelligence, conducted a raid in the Konapara area of Jatrabari. According to police reports, authorities apprehended the six individuals during the early morning hours after they allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Investigators claim the suspects had gathered at the location to participate in training sessions linked to an extremist organization.
During the court proceedings, the lead investigator, Inspector A.B. Siddique of the Jatrabari Police Station, sought a seven-day extension for the remand of the two primary suspects, citing the need for further inquiry into their operational networks. Defense counsel Mohammad Saddam Hossain argued for the release of all six, maintaining their innocence.

In response to the defense’s request, the magistrate noted that the remand was granted to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. The court emphasized that the suspects would be entitled to legal protections should the interrogation fail to substantiate links to extremist activities. The court has directed police to submit a formal investigation report by July 12.
