Bangladesh National Recitation Council Launches to Promote Cultural Development

A new cultural alliance, the Bangladesh National Recitation Council, has been established to unify recitation artists, cultural organizations, and practitioners across the country. Operating under the motto “Awakening in Sound, Bangladesh in Voice,” the organization aims to promote pristine Bengali pronunciation, advance the art of poetry recitation, and foster national cultural development.
The council officially launched on Wednesday during a press conference held at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club. During the event, the organization unveiled its executive committee, appointing Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan as president and recitation artist Enamul Haque Jewel as general secretary.

In a joint statement, the leadership emphasized that recitation serves as a potent medium for the advancement of Bengali language and literature. They noted that poetry has historically played a pivotal role in awakening collective consciousness, courage, and humanitarian values during the Language Movement, the Liberation War, and various democratic struggles.
The organization’s roadmap includes a robust agenda focused on youth development through modern training workshops, festivals, and leadership programs. Among the planned initiatives are the National Children’s Recitation Academy, the National Children’s Recitation Olympiad, university-based recitation networks, and national championship events, alongside digital recitation festivals.

To honor the legacy of the nation’s veteran artists, the council plans to implement mentorship programs, provide lifetime achievement awards, and develop a digital archive to preserve their contributions. The leadership has extended an open invitation to poets, researchers, educators, and cultural stakeholders from both public and private sectors to join this initiative.
President Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan underscored that the council seeks to preserve historical integrity, utilizing poetry and literature as a defense against the distortion of history. Echoing the importance of cultural identity, Director General of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Rezauddin Stalin urged practitioners to prioritize the works of domestic poets as a testament to patriotism.
Film actor Helal Khan, attending as the chief guest, stressed the necessity of cultivating talent at the grassroots level, calling for greater recognition of artists emerging from rural areas. National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz also addressed the gathering, asserting that cultural engagement is essential for maintaining a healthy society and noting that poetry remains one of the most refined and demanding forms of artistic expression.
