Decorated Fire Service diver dies in Narayanganj river rescue operation

The community of Goalanda in Rajbari is mourning the loss of Sadiq Hossain, a courageous firefighter and diver who died during a recovery operation in the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj. The 26-year-old diver went missing on Thursday morning while clearing water hyacinth near the Nitaiganj fire station jetty. His colleagues recovered his body following an eight-hour search operation.
Hossain, a resident of Kumrakandi village, had served with the Fire Service and Civil Defence since October 2021. Known for his bravery and professional dedication, he was honored with the President Fire Service and Civil Defence (Seba) Medal on May 19 for his contributions to various high-stakes rescue missions. Following his death, funeral prayers were held at the Fire Service headquarters in Dhaka on Friday before his remains were transported to his hometown for burial at the local municipal graveyard.
The tragedy has left his family in deep distress. His mother, Lily Begum, was seen clutching the state medal he had recently received, questioning how an expert diver could succumb to the river. According to family members, Hossain had spoken to them just three days prior and expressed his plans to visit home this coming Sunday.
Friends, neighbors, and local officials have gathered at the family home to offer condolences, describing Hossain as the primary breadwinner for his household. Local community leaders and family members have called for a formal investigation into the circumstances of his death, citing the professional training he possessed. As the community lays him to rest, the family has appealed to the government for support, as the loss of their only son leaves them in a precarious financial and emotional position.
