Elderly Man Beheaded in Home Invasion, Wife Injured

An elderly man was hacked to death and his wife critically injured in an apparent robbery attempt in Ullapara Upazila, Sirajganj, Bangladesh, early Monday.

Sobhan Pramanik, 70, was attacked in his home by intruders who cut through a wall to gain entry while he and his wife, Shefali Khatun, were asleep. The assailants struck them with sharp weapons, killing Sobhan at the scene from severe head and facial wounds. His wife sustained injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police have arrested one suspect, Hydul Islam, 50, who was apprehended by villagers and handed over to authorities. Investigators are exploring several motives, including a recent land sale by Sobhan Pramanik valued at approximately 7 million Bangladeshi taka ($60,000 USD). There is also a long-standing land dispute involving a public pond between the Molla and Pramanik families in the area, which has previously led to violence. In 2022, a father and son were killed in a clash related to this dispute.

The body of Sobhan Pramanik has been recovered and is being prepared for an autopsy at Sirajganj Medical College Hospital, according to Moktaruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Ullapara Model Police Station. He confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be taken swiftly.
