Cybercrime suspect arrested for mobile banking theft in Mymensingh

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel arrested a 24-year-old man in Mymensingh’s Haluaghat area late Monday on charges of orchestrating a sophisticated mobile banking fraud. The suspect, identified as Asif Ahmed, also known as Sayem, was taken into custody following an intelligence-led operation near the Haluaghat bus stand.
The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Chowdhury Moniruzzaman, a resident of Narail currently working in Bogura’s Shahjahanpur upazila. According to official reports, the victim’s mobile phone was compromised on June 13, granting the perpetrators unauthorized access to his mobile banking application. The attackers subsequently siphoned 300,000 taka from the victim’s salary account, distributing the funds across several external accounts.

Following the incident, the victim filed a case at the Shahjahanpur Police Station under the Cyber Security Act of 2026, naming four individuals as suspects. Asif Ahmed was identified as the fourth accused in the case and had been evading authorities since the fraud was uncovered.
Major Mir Ishtiaq Amin, company commander of RAB-14 in Mymensingh, confirmed that investigators utilized advanced digital forensics to pinpoint Ahmed’s location in Haluaghat. Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the Shahjahanpur police to face formal legal proceedings.
