Coxs Bazar Court Sentences Three Men to 10 Years for Attempted Rape of Foreign Tourist

A Cox’s Bazar court sentenced three men to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on Monday for the attempted rape of an Australian tourist in 2019. Judge Rokeya Akter of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 handed down the verdict, which also included a fine of 50,000 taka for each convict. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional month of imprisonment.
The convicted men—identified as Md. Ansarullah, Abdul Gafur, and Belal Uddin—were present in court for the sentencing. The judge acquitted a fourth individual, cottage owner Qaiyumul Haque Chowdhury, citing insufficient evidence. Court bench assistant Mohammad Shamim confirmed that the verdict was delivered following the testimony of six witnesses.

The incident occurred in December 2019 after the Australian national, who had arrived in Bangladesh earlier that month, checked into a cottage near Pechar Dwip along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive. According to the case file, the three men attempted to rape the woman late at night, two days after her arrival. She sustained injuries while struggling against her attackers and managed to escape the room, alerting others by shouting before the suspects fled the scene.
The victim contacted the national emergency service, 999, to seek assistance. Police from the Ramu station reached the location shortly thereafter, rescuing the woman and transporting her to Cox’s Bazar for medical treatment.

The legal proceedings were initiated by Swarup Kanti Das, then sub-inspector of the Himchhari police outpost, who filed the case on behalf of the state. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Ansarullah and Gafur, who reportedly confessed to their involvement in the crime during interrogation.
