Court sends two Dhaka madrasa teachers to jail over student death

A Dhaka court has ordered two teachers to be sent to prison following the discovery of a 13-year-old student’s body inside a restroom at a madrasa in the capital’s Rayerbag area. The suspects, identified as 35-year-old Hafez Md. Zakaria and 20-year-old Hafez Md. Jobayer Ahmed of the Rowajatul Ulum Hafizia Nurani Madrasa, were produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman on Tuesday.
The incident came to light on Monday afternoon when the victim, Mohammad Naim Sheikh, was found deceased on the third floor of the madrasa. Following the discovery, the victim’s mother, Nazma Begum, filed a murder case at the Kadamtali Police Station, prompting the immediate arrest of the two instructors. Sub-Inspector Amjad Hossain of Kadamtali Police Station confirmed that the court remanded the pair to custody after no legal representation appeared on their behalf during the hearing.
According to the case filed by the victim’s family, Naim and his younger brother were students at the institution. The complaint alleges that the two teachers frequently subjected Naim to physical abuse under various pretexts. When Naim informed his mother of the mistreatment, she attempted to withdraw him from the madrasa, but the administration reportedly refused to provide the necessary clearance.
The legal complaint further alleges that the fatal confrontation occurred after Naim told the teachers he no longer wished to study at the institution. Prosecutors assert that in a fit of rage, the educators assaulted the boy and subsequently strangled him between 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Kadamtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman stated that the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are currently awaiting a formal autopsy report to establish the definitive cause of death as they continue to build the case against the two suspects.
