Court Grants 18th Extension for CID Investigation into Osman Hadi Murder Case

A Dhaka court has extended the deadline for the submission of a further investigation report into the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, marking the 18th time the investigative agency has failed to meet a court-mandated timeline. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam set August 20 as the new date for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit its findings, according to Sub-Inspector Ruknuzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution division.

Hadi, who served as both the spokesperson and convener of Inqilab Mancha, was a prominent political figure who had declared his intent to run as an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 13th national parliamentary election. He was shot in the Paltan area of the capital on December 12, just one day after the election schedule was officially announced.

The victim was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital. On December 15, he was flown to Singapore for advanced medical care, where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18. Following the shooting, Abdullah Al Jaber, a member secretary of Inqilab Mancha, filed an attempted murder case at Paltan Police Station on December 14. The case was subsequently reclassified as a murder investigation following Hadi’s death.

The initial investigation, conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, resulted in a charge sheet filed on January 6 against 17 individuals, including Faisal Karim Masud. However, the plaintiff filed a formal objection to the findings, leading the court to task the CID with a more comprehensive investigation. Despite this mandate, the CID has yet to finalize its report after 18 consecutive extensions.
