Committee to find irregularities and corruption in the last 17 years of local government

A committee of seven members has been formed to investigate whether there has been any irregularity or corruption in the local government department and its subordinate offices, organizations and institutions in the last 17 years. The committee has been asked to give an investigative report after reviewing the overall activities of the period from January 2009 to February 17, 2026.
The local government department’s office order issued on May 12 asked the committee to submit a report within the next 60 working days. The committee will collect the necessary information and evidence for the preparation of the report. Committee members can co-opt if necessary.
As per the office order, the committee has been convened by the Director General of Local Government Department. The members of the committee are Deputy Secretary of District Council Branch of Local Government Department, Khondkar Farhad Ahmad, Deputy Secretary of City Corporation-1 Branch. Rabiul Islam, Senior Assistant Secretary of Pass-3 branch deleted. Aktarun Necha, Administration-1 Branch Senior Assistant Secretary Tahmina Akhtar and Development-2 Branch Senior Assistant Secretary ABM Ariful Islam. Joint Secretary of Planning-1 Division of Local Government Department has been made the member secretary of the committee. Samshul Islam.
Local level development, infrastructure construction, citizen services and various projects are implemented across the country through the local government department and its affiliated institutions. The committee will now look into whether there has been any irregularity, corruption, abuse of power or waste of money in these long-term activities.
Awami League (now banned) was in power during the period fixed to find corruption and irregularities. The period of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus is also included.
In this regard, the Minister of State for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam told Prothom Alo, “If there is looting somewhere in the name of development, it will not be suppressed.” Every local government department’s money is people’s money. That money will be accounted for. Who was in power at what time is not important; There is no opportunity to avoid responsibility if there is irregularity.
The state minister also said, “If people’s money has been wasted or embezzled by showing development on paper, no one will be exempted.” Action will be taken against the responsible persons on the basis of evidence. This search is not meant to harass anyone; To bring back transparency and accountability in the local government system.
