Chittagong University student faces alleged indecent remarks from unidentified male student

A female student at the University of Chittagong faced online harassment after posting a comment in a private Facebook group for university members. An anonymous user responded to her post with vulgar insults, later identified as Ali Ahsan Mojahed, a third-year Arabic student and activist with the Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The incident, which occurred Saturday night, has sparked widespread criticism on social media and within the campus community. The victim shared her experience on Facebook, leading to her account of the harassment circulating online. Mojahed is also reportedly the public relations secretary for a student organization called “Voice of Students.”

The private Facebook group, “Chittagong University Family,” is used by students, faculty, and staff to discuss various contemporary issues. According to sources close to the victim, the offensive comments were made after she commented on a post concerning the Shamsun Nahar Hall, a female dormitory, and its hall parliament. Mojahed, who previously knew the student through cultural programs, allegedly used an anonymous account to post the “vulgar” remarks. The identity of the anonymous user was revealed through the group’s administrators and moderators.
In a direct message to Mojahed, the victim confronted him, and he reportedly admitted to making the comments, claiming he was instructed to do so and offered an apology. However, the student expressed concern over the use of pseudonyms for harassment and stated she would pursue further action upon her return to university after the Eid holidays. Attempts to reach Mojahed for comment by phone and text message were unsuccessful.

Mohammad Parvez, the secretary of the university’s Islami Chhatra Shibir unit, confirmed Mojahed’s past affiliation with the organization. Parvez stated that Mojahed had been inactive for a long time and had also joined other student organizations, which violates Shibir’s policy against dual membership. He added that disciplinary action would be taken against Mojahed.
Fazle Rabbi, the law and human rights secretary of the University Students’ Union (Chaksu), indicated that while a formal complaint has not yet been filed due to the victim’s absence, Chaksu is in contact with her. They are assisting her in filing a complaint with the university’s anti-ragging and bullying cell and have advised her to pursue legal action at the cyber tribunal. Chaksu’s free legal aid cell will provide pro bono legal support.
University Assistant Proctor Professor Md. Kamrul Hossain stated that no official complaint has been lodged with his office. He assured that appropriate action would be taken based on any formal complaint, utilizing the university’s designated committees for investigation.
