Chinese national alleges fraud by Bangladeshi wife in Kurigram domestic dispute

A Chinese national has sought police assistance in northern Bangladesh after alleging that his wife, a local woman, absconded with approximately $4,000 in cash and his travel documents. An Hongwei, the complainant, traveled to his wife’s family home in the Dharmapur village of Fulbari, Kurigram, on Monday, sparking significant local attention as residents gathered to witness the encounter.

According to police reports, An met Morsheda Begum, a native of Fulbari, while both were employed at a garment factory in the Savar area near Dhaka. The couple married on April 20. An told authorities that his wife subsequently disappeared with his money and important personal records, leaving him to navigate the local landscape to find her.

Local investigations have revealed that Morsheda had been previously married for a decade to a day laborer, with whom she has an eight-year-old daughter. That relationship ended in divorce before she moved to Dhaka for employment and entered into the marriage with the Chinese citizen. A family member, speaking on the condition of anonymity, acknowledged that Morsheda had borrowed money from her new husband before losing contact with him.

The Fulbari Police Station officer-in-charge, Mahmudul Hasan, stated that language barriers have hampered efforts to secure a detailed statement from the complainant. Because the alleged deception and the marriage occurred in the Savar area, officials have advised the man to pursue his legal complaint with the Savar police, which holds jurisdiction over the incident.

Morsheda Begum remains unreachable, as multiple attempts to contact her via telephone have been unsuccessful. Local community leaders noted that the marriage had raised concerns among neighbors at the time, given the woman’s background and the swift nature of the relationship. Police continue to facilitate the man’s request for legal recourse as he seeks to recover his assets and documents.
