Chandpur Jeweler Arrested and Sent to Jail Over Fraud Allegations Involving Mortgaged Gold

CHANDPUR — A prominent gold trader in Chandpur was sent to jail by a local court on Saturday following his arrest in a fraud case. The suspect, 45-year-old Pintu Das, is the proprietor of S.K. Jewellers and Shilpalay, located in the Akhand Market on Comilla Road.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Model Police Station, Fayez Ahmed, confirmed that the accused was remanded to prison. The arrest followed a complaint filed earlier today by Russell Khan, a resident of Raghunathpur in the Sadar upazila.
In his complaint, Russell Khan alleged that he and several others had obtained loans from Pintu Das by pledging various gold ornaments, including chains, earrings, and lockets. According to the plaintiff, when the victims attempted to repay the loans to recover their collateral, Pintu Das repeatedly delayed returning the pledged assets, prompting legal action.
Police investigations revealed that Pintu Das fled his rented residence in Chandpur with his family during the early hours of August 20. Before his departure, multiple customers and business associates had filed both written and verbal complaints with the police and the local gold traders’ association, accusing him of embezzling money and misappropriating pledged gold ornaments.
Acting on these reports, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Kalam Gazi apprehended Pintu Das on Friday morning in the Dalghat Daspara area of Patiya, Chittagong. Following his detention, investigation teams from Dhaka and Chandpur interrogated him throughout Friday, confirming the validity of the allegations brought forward by the complainants. Following his appearance in court on Saturday, the magistrate ordered him to be held in custody pending further proceedings.
