Man arrested for fatal stabbing of child in Lakshmipur after tree climbing dispute

LAKSHMIPUR — Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila for the fatal stabbing of a 12-year-old boy who allegedly refused to climb a tree to harvest betel nuts.
The suspect, identified as Md. Rubel, son of Md. Milon, was apprehended during a police operation on Saturday night. He was produced before a court on Sunday and subsequently remanded to jail custody.
The victim, Riad Hossain, was the son of Sahed Hossain. According to a press release issued Sunday by Additional Superintendent of Police Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, the altercation began when Rubel pressured the boy to climb a tree to pick betel nuts. When Riad declined, a heated argument ensued, leading Rubel to allegedly attack the child with a sharp knife.
The victim sustained critical stab wounds to his chest, abdomen, and lower left leg. Local residents rushed the bleeding boy to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Sahed Hossain, the boy’s father, has filed a formal murder case against Rubel. Reflecting on the tragedy, the grieving father stated that while his son was expected to return home that evening, the family instead had to recover his lifeless body.
Md. Wahid Parvez, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station, described the incident as a brutal killing. He noted that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect is a drug addict. During initial interrogation, Rubel reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime.
The incident has left the local community in shock, with reports indicating a somber atmosphere throughout the area as residents mourn the loss of the young child.
