Chief Prosecutor Alleges RAB Abducted Salahuddin Ahmed in 2015 Before Pushing Him Into India

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md. Aminul Islam has stated that incumbent Home Affairs Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed was forcibly disappeared by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in 2015. According to the Chief Prosecutor, Ahmed was detained within a RAB Task Force for Interrogation (TFI) cell before being trafficked across the border into India.
Speaking to reporters at his office on Sunday, the Chief Prosecutor confirmed that the tribunal is currently investigating the forced disappearance as a crime against humanity. Retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, who served as an additional director general of the Rapid Action Battalion during the time of the incident, is currently in custody in connection with the case.
The Chief Prosecutor stated that investigators have made significant progress and have established the involvement of the Rapid Action Battalion in the abduction. Authorities are now vetting evidence to identify other high-ranking officials from the former government who may have been complicit in the operation.
Officials have reportedly identified both the initial location from which Ahmed was abducted and the subsequent site where he was held in confinement. On the night of March 10, 2015, Ahmed—who was serving as a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at the time—was taken from a residence in the Uttara area of the capital. His wife, Hasina Ahmed, had filed a complaint at the time alleging that members of law enforcement agencies were responsible for his abduction.
Following his disappearance, Ahmed was discovered by local police in Shillong, Meghalaya, on May 11, 2015. Indian authorities reported at the time that he was found wandering in a disoriented state before being taken into protective custody.
Following the collapse of the Awami League government amid a mass uprising on August 5, 2024, the Indian government issued a travel pass to Ahmed. He officially returned to Bangladesh on August 11, 2024.
