International Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Links Cultural Figure to Journalist Couple Sagar and Runi Murder Case

The Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Aminul Islam, announced on Sunday that investigators have uncovered potential links between a prominent cultural figure and the 2012 murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
Speaking to reporters at his office, the Chief Prosecutor stated that the evidence emerged during the analysis of call detail records (CDR) while investigating an unrelated case. Although the agency has identified this individual, Islam declined to disclose the person’s identity, citing the ongoing verification process.
The investigation into the double murder remains primarily under the jurisdiction of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Islam clarified that while the Tribunal’s investigative body is not formally tasked with the Sagar-Runi case, they frequently uncover incidental information during their broader inquiries. He noted that once the findings regarding the cultural figure are sufficiently verified, the Tribunal will share the intelligence with PBI investigators to assist in their formal proceedings.
Sagar Sarowar, who served as news editor at Machranga Television, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered in their rented apartment in the West Rajabazar area of the capital on February 11, 2012.
Addressing inquiries regarding the legal scope of the case, the Chief Prosecutor confirmed that the Sagar-Runi murder does not fall under the purview of the International Crimes Tribunal. He explained that the incident does not constitute a widespread or systematic crime, categorizing it instead as an independent criminal case that must be adjudicated in the appropriate sessions court.
