New Delhi police have denied permission for an international discussion hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club (FCC) in the Indian capital, citing potential controversy as the primary reason for the cancellation. The event had been scheduled to take place on Saturday evening.
Organizers suggested that authorities moved to block the event due to the inclusion of participants perceived to have ties to the Awami League. The decision follows a period of heightened diplomatic tension between India and Bangladesh, which was further exacerbated after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appeared virtually at an FCC event on August 5 to comment on the political situation in Bangladesh.
The denial of the permit underscores the sensitivity surrounding discussions involving representatives of the former Bangladeshi government within India. Neither the Delhi Police nor the club officials provided further clarification on the specific security or political concerns that prompted the last-minute intervention.
