Case filed against personal assistant of MP Shahjahan Chowdhury over extortion allegations in Chittagong

A case has been filed against Arman Uddin, the personal assistant to Shahjahan Chowdhury, the Member of Parliament for the Chittagong-15 constituency and a central working committee member of Jamaat-e-Islami, on charges of demanding 2 million taka in extortion money. The case was filed on Sunday in the court of Chittagong Judicial Magistrate Khadija Akter by Amir Hossain, a Bangladeshi expatriate from the Amirabad area of Lohagara.

The plaintiff’s lawyer, Kabir Jilan, stated that the court has recorded the plaintiff’s statement and directed the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Satkania Circle to conduct an investigation. In addition to Arman Uddin, the other individuals named in the complaint are Arif Uddin, Shawkat Ali, Md. Arman Uddin, Md. Adil, Md. Anwar, and Joynal Abedin.

According to the case documents, Amir Hossain owns a four-story building in the Aziz Complex area of Lohagara. The plaintiff alleges that while he was residing abroad, Arif Uddin, led by Arman Uddin, began demanding 2 million taka in extortion money. On the night of April 3, the accused allegedly broke into a ground-floor shop rented by a tenant named Obaidul, stealing steel cabinets, wall showcases, and other inventory valued at approximately 1.15 million taka. Furthermore, the complaint alleges that the group stole 120,000 taka in cash from the shop before installing new locks. The plaintiff also claims the suspects pressured other tenants in the building to pay their rent directly to them.

The complaint further details an incident on August 20, when the accused allegedly met at the plaintiff’s market. During the meeting, Arif Uddin reportedly threatened that they would not vacate the premises unless the 2 million taka was paid. The plaintiff also alleged that Arman Uddin pressured him via telephone to comply with their demands. During the confrontation, the accused allegedly physically assaulted the plaintiff, causing injuries.

Amir Hossain stated that he turned to the court after local police refused to register his initial complaint. He has requested a thorough investigation into the extortion allegations.

Efforts to reach Arman Uddin for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained unreachable. He did not respond to subsequent text messages seeking his response to the allegations.
