Court orders arrest of Nasa Group chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder in Gulshan attempted murder case

A Dhaka court on Monday ordered NASA Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder to be formally arrested in connection with an attempted murder case stemming from the July mass uprising in the capital’s Gulshan area.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Sefatullah issued the order following a hearing. The court directed that Mazumder, who is currently in custody, be remanded into prison pending further proceedings.
The request to formally arrest Mazumder was filed by Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam of Gulshan Police Station, the investigation officer assigned to the case. During the hearing, the investigator informed the court that evidence suggests Mazumder provided financial support and issued orders for individuals to open fire on protesters, including the victim, Abdul Jabbar Ali. Police argued that his formal arrest is essential for a thorough investigation.
Mazumder was initially apprehended by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the Gulshan area on October 1, 2024. He was subsequently placed on a seven-day remand in connection with the murder of Emon Hossain Gazi in the capital’s Jatrabari area. Following the completion of that remand, he was sent to jail. On August 18, police applied to have him shown as arrested in the Gulshan attempted murder case, leading to Monday’s court ruling.
The case details indicate that on July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination movement, protesters were demonstrating in front of the Confidence Tower in the Shahjadpur area of Gulshan. According to the complaint, police and members of the Awami League opened fire on the demonstrators, resulting in gunshot wounds to Abdul Jabbar Ali, who worked as a van driver.
The victim filed the attempted murder case with Gulshan Police Station on December 11, 2024. The lawsuit names 109 individuals as defendants, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
