Body of missing toddler recovered from Arial Khan river days after mother found dead in Madaripur

Police in Shibchar, Madaripur, recovered the decomposed body of a one-year-old boy from the Arial Khan River on Monday, five days after the remains of his mother were discovered in a nearby forest. Local residents spotted the child’s body floating in the Nilkhi area of the Upazila and alerted authorities, prompting a response from the local police and river police units.
The body has been transferred to the morgue at Madaripur 250-Bed District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibchar Police Station, Kamal Hossain, confirmed the recovery.
The discovery follows the finding of the mother’s unidentified body in the Bakherkandi area of Madবরchar Union on August 19. Investigators later identified the victim as a resident of Lalpur, Natore. The victim’s father has since filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at the Shibchar Police Station.
According to police, the victim had been married to Sahabuddin Howlader of Boromeher, Madaripur Sadar, three years ago, with whom she had her son, Abir. While her husband was incarcerated, the victim reportedly became acquainted with Faruq Mollah from Bakherkandi. Authorities allege that Faruq lured the woman to his home, where he raped and subsequently murdered her before dumping her body in the forest and disposing of the child in the Arial Khan River.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Shibchar police and members of RAB-8, tracked and arrested Faruq in the Rajoir area using information technology. Officers recovered the victim’s necklace, shawl, and a pair of shoes during the operation.
Under initial interrogation, the suspect confessed to throwing the infant, Abir, off the Arial Khan bridge into the river. Following the confession, authorities launched a search operation, which concluded with the discovery of the child’s remains on Monday morning. OC Kamal Hossain stated that legal proceedings are ongoing and that further action will be taken based on the suspect’s testimony.
