Joypurhat health official issued show-cause notice for treating patients at private diagnostic center during duty hours

A medical officer at the Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex in Joypurhat has been issued a show-cause notice following allegations that he abandoned his official duties to attend to private patients at a nearby diagnostic center.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around noon when the medical officer, identified as Morshedul Islam, was reportedly found providing medical services at The Popular Diagnostic Center, located just outside the government hospital premises. Local residents discovered the physician at the private facility and surrounded him, prompting the hospital administration and local police to intervene and escort him back to the health complex.
Eyewitnesses and patients waiting at the government hospital reported that Islam left his assigned chamber abruptly around midday after receiving a phone call. At the time of his departure, several patients were still queuing for consultations. Some of these patients and local residents followed him to the diagnostic center, where they confirmed he was seeing private patients during his mandated duty hours.
Russell Ahmed, the director of The Popular Diagnostic Center, confirmed that Morshedul Islam was indeed present at the facility to see patients but stated that the physician’s reasons for being there during hospital hours were personal.
In his defense, Morshedul Islam denied abandoning patients at the health complex, claiming that he had gone to the diagnostic center in response to an urgent call and insisted that no patients were waiting for him at the hospital at that time.
Abu Shafi Mahmud, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer for Akkelpur, stated that government medical officers are strictly prohibited from practicing privately while on duty. He confirmed that the administration has issued a show-cause notice to the accused physician and has formally notified the Civil Surgeon of the incident.
Joypurhat Civil Surgeon Al-Mamun stated that the incident is under investigation and confirmed that a probe committee will be established to review the physician’s conduct and determine further disciplinary action.
