Traditional Boat Racing Festival Revives Rural Culture Along Bangali River in Bogura

The monsoon-swollen Bangali River has become the epicenter of traditional festivities in Bogura’s Sherpur Upazila, as thousands of spectators gather to witness annual boat racing competitions. The event, held in the villages of Chomor Pathalia and Sughat under Sughat Union, has transformed the riverbanks into a vibrant hub of local culture and communal celebration.
The competition features 13 teams hailing from across Bogura, Sirajganj, and Pabna districts. As the racing boats surge forward, rowers synchronize their strokes to the rhythmic beat of traditional drums and the melody of Sari songs, a performance that has captivated crowds stretching over two kilometers along the riverfront.
Complementing the boat races is a sprawling rural fair featuring approximately 400 vendors. The fair offers a variety of goods, including wooden furniture, local food, and entertainment for children, such as Ferris wheels. According to organizers, the festivities commenced last Friday and are scheduled to continue daily through Wednesday. The fair operates from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the boat races held between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Event organizer Harun Or Rashid stated that the community has maintained this tradition for three decades, hosting the event annually as floodwaters recede. He noted that the initiative is a collaborative effort involving residents from six to seven neighboring villages, including Jhajor, Baroitoli, Kalyani, and Chomor Pathalia. To recognize the participants’ efforts, organizers plan to present awards to all 13 competing teams.
Local residents view the event as an essential pillar of regional heritage and social cohesion. For many, such as visitors Jhorna Rani and Rekha Rani, the races serve as a vital annual recreation that bridges village life with long-standing cultural customs.
Security remains a primary focus for the duration of the event. The local organizing committee has deployed 100 volunteers to assist law enforcement in maintaining order. Sherpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge S.M. Moinuddin confirmed that security measures will remain in place until the conclusion of the fair to ensure the festivities proceed without disruption.
