BNP Minister Urges Restraint Amid Calls to Guard Against Authoritarian Resurgence

Minister of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain has urged members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to exercise maximum restraint and maintain public order following the July mass uprising. Addressing a discussion in Birampur, Dinajpur, on Wednesday, the minister cautioned party activists against reacting to provocations, emphasizing that retaliatory insults or physical altercations would undermine public support.
The event, organized by the Birampur upazila and municipal units of the BNP at the municipal Dhaka More, served as a platform to commemorate the July revolution. Presided over by upazila unit president Mia Md. Shafiqul Alam, the meeting featured a strong directive from the minister to prioritize public perception and patience, noting that the electorate would ultimately deliver its own verdict on political conduct.
During his address, the minister issued a stern warning against the resurgence of the ousted regime. He asserted that the collective strength of BNP supporters is prepared to confront any conspiracy, provided they maintain the trust and support of the general public. He argued that the party remains a central pillar of the nation’s political landscape, successfully enduring 17 years of systemic efforts to eliminate it from the arena.
Minister Hossain framed the resilience of the BNP as a reflection of the people’s will, suggesting that the public has consistently reaffirmed their faith in the party. He stressed that the focus must remain on safeguarding the nation from the influence of the fallen autocracy, ensuring that no individual associated with the previous regime finds political refuge in Birampur or elsewhere in the country.
The discussion was preceded by a victory procession led by the minister, which traveled from the Birampur Government College field along the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway to the Dhaka More. The event was attended by a broad contingent of local BNP leadership, including district vice-president Tushaddek Hossain, upazila general secretary Manjur Elahi Chowdhury, and municipal leaders Humayun Kabir and Rezaul Karim. Local representatives from the Hakimpur unit were also present to mark the occasion.
