BNP Leader’s Son Faces Charges After Allegedly Assaulting Police Officer During Pond Lease Dispute

A police constable was assaulted in Dinajpur’s Birampur upazila on Monday after a dispute over a government pond lease escalated into a confrontation involving local political activists. Constable Nuruzzaman Sarker was allegedly kicked while attempting to document a disturbance outside the office of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Tanzina Khatun.

The incident occurred during an official process to accept lease applications for a government-owned pond. According to the case statement, Rahaduzzaman Parag, 27, the son of the local BNP joint general secretary, and Al Amin, 25, a joint convener of the municipal Chhatra Dal, were among a group that began creating a disturbance and obstructing the application process.

When Constable Sarker began recording the scene on his personal mobile phone, he was confronted by the group. The situation intensified as the suspects attempted to force their way into the UNO’s office, engaging in verbal abuse and physical shoving with security personnel. The constable reported being kicked during the scuffle, after which the group reportedly compelled him to delete the recorded footage in the presence of the UNO.

Following the confrontation, a meeting was held at the UNO’s office between local administration officials and senior BNP leadership in an apparent attempt to mediate the situation. Despite the presence of high-ranking officials, including the assistant commissioner (land) and the local assistant superintendent of police, conflicting accounts of the event have emerged. While local youth wing leader Sanowar Hossain confirmed witnessing the physical assault on the constable, UNO Tanzina Khatun stated she did not personally witness the altercation, noting that the accused have denied the allegations.

By late Monday night, Birampur police filed a formal case against Rahaduzzaman Parag, Al Amin, and five to six unidentified individuals. Charges include obstructing government officials in the discharge of their duties and physical assault. Inspector (Investigation) Shamim Al Mamun confirmed that police have launched an operation to apprehend the suspects. Constable Sarker received primary medical treatment at the local health complex following the incident.
