BNP Leader Under Investigation After Drug Use Video Surfaces in Joypurhat

The Akkelpur Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a show-cause notice to Saidur Islam, the president of the Gopinathpur Union branch, following the circulation of a video on social media purportedly showing him consuming narcotics. In addition to the disciplinary notice, the local party leadership has established a five-member committee to conduct a formal investigation into the incident.

The decision was formalized Tuesday night through letters signed by Upazila BNP President Kamruzzaman Kamal and General Secretary Arif Iftekhar Ahmed Rana. The notice asserts that the footage of Islam consuming illicit substances is contrary to party discipline, organizational policy, and public standards of conduct. Islam has been directed to provide a written explanation within seven working days detailing why disciplinary action should not be taken against him. The investigative committee is mandated to submit its findings within ten working days.

Attempts to reach Saidur Islam for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained powered off. However, following the initial spread of the video, Islam claimed that the footage was the result of a political conspiracy. He alleged that his opponents lured him to the Gopinathpur market lessee’s office and forced him to consume yaba tablets to stage the recording and sabotage his preparations for an upcoming Union Parishad chairmanship election.

Addressing the controversy, Upazila BNP President Kamruzzaman Kamal confirmed that the party will determine the appropriate disciplinary measures against Islam based on the outcome of the formal inquiry.
