Four held over disruption at Palak court hearing remanded by Dhaka court

A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed four individuals on remand following their arrest for allegedly inciting chaos during a court hearing for former state minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak. Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jewel Rana granted the remand after police requested custody for further interrogation.
The four defendants—Mostakim Hossain, 51, Md. Nur Alam, 35, Md. Ruhul Amin, 29, and Md. Anwar Hossain, 48—were taken into custody on July 26. According to the case statement, the arrests occurred at the metropolitan sessions judge court premises as Palak was being escorted to a prison van. Authorities allege that a group of supporters of a banned organization gathered near the canteen gate and chanted anti-government slogans in an attempt to disrupt the proceedings.

Police from Kotwali station intervened as the group attempted to flee the scene. Following the arrests, Sub-Inspector Jaminur Rahman filed a case against the suspects under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
In the remand application submitted on July 27, investigators argued that the suspects must be interrogated to uncover the broader plot behind the disturbance. The police seek to identify the locations of other fugitives involved in the incident, as well as to expose potential financiers and architects of the disruption.

The defense counsel, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, challenged the arrests, asserting that the accused were simply supporters who had come to observe the court proceedings. She described the detention as a matter of concern, arguing that the individuals were arrested without clear evidence of criminal intent or specific wrongdoing within the court premises, characterizing the police action as a significant human rights violation.
